Cell Telomere to Control Life Clock

The research on cell telomere has opened up another door for eternal life. After splitting for 50 or 60 times, human cells will stop splitting, showing an aging state. In the past,it was just according to the analysis of the number of times of cell division of the human body that scientists thought the number of times of human cell division was usually 50, and the average division cycle was 2.4 years, hence, they reached the conclusion:Human longevity limit is 120 years.

Now,scientists have found a substance called “telomere”, existing on the top of the chromosome, and a “telomerase” that can maintain the length of the telomere. Each time the cell splits, the telomere on top of the chromosome is shortened; when the telomere can no longer be shortened, the cell will not be able to keep splitting. Then, the cell begins to die. However, it is found that cancer cells can split again and again without limit, and never grow old. The non-aging of the cancer cell has become an important clue for research on the normal cell. Once the genetic gene of the telomerase is generated in the human cell, the human cell will be able to split limitlessly like the cancer cell, then, we will be able to prolong human life limitlessly.
California Gerun Biotech Company’s researcher Cal Harley made an experiment to use the gene engineering method to change the cell telomere. Professor Jerry Shea and Professor Woodring Wright, cytobiology and nervous system scientists in Southwest Medical Science Center of US Texas University made such an experiment:After inserting some gene into the collected foreskin cell (a by-product from circumcision), the gene could cause the cell to generate telomerase. Usually, before getting old, the foreskin cell can split for 60 times or so. But after the aforesaid experiment, the cell has already split for more 300 times, and there is no sign of stopping at all, and no abnormal sign has appeared, either. “At the action of the telomerase, the cell is just like a bunny that has been injected with an excitant,” said Shea, “it is just splitting and splitting without end.” In the meantime,Shea and Wright’s partners, US Geron Company’s researchers did the same experiment by using the human body’s retinal cells. As a result, these cells seem to get the ability to live forever, too.

The research on the telomerase has undoubtedly brought about a new great hope for realization of mankind’s dream of “eternal life”, so, there is no reason now to say man cannot live to the age of 1000, 10000, or even higher. Scientists call the telomere “life’s clock”,and believe, by finding the way to set back this clock, we may realize our dream of “living forever”.

Scientists have also found that death has something to do with the “death hormone” produced by the person himself. Biologists’ experiment on the octopus has proved so. Once the female octopus has “given birth to a child”, it will die silently. Scientists have uncovered the secret:A pair of glands behind the eye socket of the octopus will secrete a chemical substance at a certain time, which leads to the death of the octopus. Biologists call such a chemical substance “death hormone”. Is there such a “death gland” in mankind like the octopus? Research has found there is such a thing indeed. But mankind’s “death gland” is not behind the eyes, but in the brain, which is the pituitary gland. Scientists’ research has proved that human pituitary gland also releases a “death hormone” at a certain time, causing the person to go towards death.
