Raise the tobacco tax! Curb teen smoking: Higher prices stop many youngsters from getting hooked. States with the highest excise taxes have some of the lowest teen smoking rates.
A MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the country’s top political advisory body, submitted a proposal at this year’s ongoing session suggesting that a pack of cigarettes should cost at least 10 yuan ($1.4) to deter teenagers from smoking. He considers that it is possible that more teenagers, many of whom are not financially independent and have limited money to spend, would abstain from smoking if cigarettes were priced higher. Is it feasible?
If current tobacco use patterns persist, according to the American Lung Association, an estimated 6.4 million children will die prematurely from a smoking-related disease. Oh, really? How do they come up with these numbers? I guess they figure if they repeat it enough, people will believe them.
